spac100.gif (98 bytes) InbodyPilot.jpg (18585 bytes) In the early years of the 20th century, John Inbody was busy making hundreds of wonderful real photo images in Northern Indiana.  Actually his geographic range seems to have been quite narrow.  The cards that I have found over the years are primarily from Elkhart and its environs.  There are also a number of cards featuring Billy Sunday, the famous evangelist, from the Winona Lake area.

When I found the very rare card shown to the left, I knew I had to own it!  The card not only touched on a big interest of ours, aviation, but also documented Inbody himself sitting in the pilot's seat.  This card is one of the best postcard advertising issues I've ever seen.  The caption across the upper wing of the plane reads:  "Will return tomorrow with a bunch of postcards; J. Inbody, the Post Card Man".

The overwhelming percentage of Inbody's real photo postcards that have survived appear to be in  'better than average' condition.  You can tell he worked very carefully by looking at the composition and tonality of his work, so it's very easy to  see him as a finicky worker in the darkroom as well.

At left is an image of the depot in Elkhart.  Note how the  smoke coming off the train in the image doubles as clouds in the sky.  I think the "Twentieth Century Limited" sign on the back of the train was probably added by him (montage) to the original photo.

For another image of Inbody's you can check out the real photo of Art Smith and his wife that I included in the Elopement Disaster exhibit.
